Parrot Parrot - this has good information about buying birds.
A good book about Senegals is Complete Guide to the Senegal Parrot and it's family by Mattie Sue Athan
Senegals are known for three different things. Their known for their acrobatics, their mischievousness, and their lovablity!
Senegals love to hang upside down of perches or fingers. They like to swing on swings and have a good old time. I know my senegal loves to do flips on her perch.
They also have a courious bone in their body which can cause mischief. They are very good at distroying things, like wood, fabric, paper and anything you can think of. They also like to chew off buttons on your clothes. My Senegal likes to use her mind and figure problems out too. And to go along with courious, if you're doing something, they want to see what you are doing and even help you. Although if you're doing homework, their helping doesn't help you!
The teacher doesn't seem to believe you if you say your bird ate your homework.
Although they may destroy your homework, they can also be very loveable. They love to sit in your lap and cuddle with you. They adore attention but who doesn't?
Senegals also, like almost all birds, want to learn how to do things. They can be taught simple things like "Step up," "Come," "Fly to cage" and other simple commands. They can even be taught to say words on command. My Senegal knows that when I say hi, then she gives me a kiss. Or is she says hi, I give her a kiss.
Senegals are good apartment birds. They are the quietest out of all of their family members which include Meyer's, Red-bellied, the Brown Heads and Jardine parrots.
Their talking ablity depends on the bird. Some birds love to learn to talk and other prefer not to. Some learn only a few words and others learn extensive amouts of words and phrases. They also love to mimic household noises like the telephone, the doorbell, and even the closing of doors! My Senegal loves to "answer" the phone. When she hears the phone ringing, she makes the noise that you push to answer the phone. So sometimes you think someone has answered the phone when really, the bird has.
What they are missing in size, they make up in Personality. If you've never owned a bird before you think, a bird has personality? That's what I thought before I owned Kiwi. But my how much of a personality they have. It is almost like having a little kid in the house. Kiwi enjoys laughing at people and she knows just when to do it too. And all senegals believe they are bigger then what they are so don't tell them any different.
They are known to become one person birds but you can teach them to be family birds. My Kiwi is unfortunatly a one person bird but she is getting better at letting other people touch her. They can't pick her up yet but they can touch her. I have also heard, but I don't know if it is true, that as they get older they start to mellow out and if they were a one person bird, they turn into a family bird. Now I don't know if that is true but I do know that as my Kiwi gets older she's letting more and more people touch her.
